* A Radio Show I Especially Commend to Your Attention
On my Virginia radio shows, I don’t always feel that I’m able to convey as I would like what it is that’s important to me. The contentiousness into which the conversation often gets swept up tends to divert the discussion, sometimes in unwelcome ways, and to thwart some of my efforts to communicate the essential part of what I believe and who I really am.
This coming Tuesday, July 6, I’ll be doing a show on which I hope to create a space that can correct that problem. It is one that’s dedicated to such questions as who I am, what I’m about, what I value, and why my views of things should be of any interest to the WSVA audience.
The show will begin by my being interviewed by the host on this occasion, a Mr. Frank Wilt, who is program director for the station. I’ve done shows with his before, and I expect he’ll do well in facilitating my saying my say. (How well I’ll be able to rise to the occasion is up to me.) It will be spontaneous, and I’ll learn what questions he wants to ask me as he does so on the air.
In the meanwhile, Frank is inviting people from the audience to email him questions they would like to have posed to me. He’ll be selecting from them whichever ones he thinks will enhance the show. These questions can be about my background, values, beliefs (political and other), my purposes in appearing on that station, my perceptions of the main elements in our present political/moral/cultural situation.
These questions can be sent to Frank at liveandlocal550@wsvaonline.com
I would like to invite you to contribute to the show by sending in some thoughtful questions. They can be sent in DURING the show as well.
You can hear the show, live, at sp.crystalmedianetworks.com/player/?q=show/wsva
Once you’re there, click the “Play” button near the red letters saying “Live Stream.”
The show will begin shortly after 10:05 AM EASTERN TIME and will continue, with the usual breaks, until 11:30. At some point, the show will open up to phone calls . And the numbers for such calls are 540-433-9782 and 800-388-9782.
I hope you’ll consider listening, and consider also your contributing good questions to the show.

Thanks for this thread, Andy; looking forward to your program.Frank is a much better moderator than Jim-his ego doesn`t get in the way.
…think I`ll submit a question.

Here’s a question: What were the events/elements/factors in your life that fueled your passion for None So Blind and getting out your message (in a moral, ethical, fair way?) Sorry it’s rambling, but you get the gist.

Hi Andy,
I thought you could edit my question and send it in.. now I see that maybe I need to send it in myself.. yes? Livvie

Yes, Livvie, questions for the show should be sent in by you (singular and plural), though it’s fine to share them here too. Thank you for doing so.

I wish you well on your show. Can’t listen on Tuesdays — it’s a work day. Will it be available later?

Wow, excellent show Dr. Schmookler! Was just wondering if our beloved David R. was that somewhat older gent. with that somewhat southern accent ? Was it he???
July 6th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
I doubt it, but I don’t really know. There are plenty of older conservative Christian gents in the listening audience that its being a voice from Tennessee is unlikely.
Thanks for the “excellent show” comment, Steve. I have felt good but uncertain during and since, not knowing just how well I was choosing as I made my decisions about where to go in that big space the show provided me, and what posture and tone to take. I made decisions as best I could, and hoped for the best, then wondered about how well my judgment served me.
So if you want to elaborate on how you saw the show, I’d be grateful to hear the picture fleshed out.

Everything seemed to flow nicely from what I could tell. I tuned in via the website stream feed. You seemed to work well with the host and he kept up his end of the bargain pretty well by letting the listener feedback unfold from various perspectives (he was also good in steering the conversation back to ‘who you were’).
Your highlighting Krugman and the NY Times as trusted news sources was good but I also liked how you explained your political stance as a liberal/reluctant democrat. It was kind of quick and difficult to tell who was a local listener of the station and who wasn’t. Perhaps it would help if you suggest to the call screener he/she get a first name and area/state before the host brings on that caller. Re-David R. as a possible caller: I could of sworn he was one of the first few to call in and whine about there not being enough money for this or that. Anyways, was a strong show with a lot to build on there, imho.
I look forward to to the next one!
Steve

Didn’t hear the show, Andy. Was busily at work accumulating and overcoming difficulties,
I say, accumulating what money I could for local, State and Federal taxes for their salaries, insurance premiums, vacations and other benefits and pensions they will (or do) draw. Not to mentikon all the other goodies the governments hand out. Having fun !
Actually would like to hear this one to hear what you feel you are all about
although it is pretty clear from all these months on NSB.
Why cannot your programs be archived so that they can be listened to
on internet as people have time and opportunity to listen ?
July 6th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
That should soon become possible.
July 7th, 2010 at 6:36 am
Well, David R., there you go we’ve both turned out to be wrong maybe just a couple of times from all these months on NSB. It only adds to the intrigue that is yourself if u DO make that call, which I think many here would enjoy. But no worries there should be enough opportunity in the near future. As I mentioned, there’s a lot to take and build upon for next time based on what I believe was a very tight/clean (technically), cordial and swift initial chemistry (that lasted throughout) between ABS, the host and audience. Btw, I’ll try to elaborate more, later on if I can, Doc. Thanks again for all you’re doing, and keep up the great work.

One last remark- Obviously Andy might not use the same words to describe how he thought the show went. For instance, I have no idea to what extent the discussion was very “cordial and swift.” The interaction (sometimes discussion) may or may not have impressed others as much as it did me. However, I did notice a very technically clean program with minimal devolutions or hang ups on the whole. I could be way off in thinking the show was more productive than it seemed. To me it came off as a low A, high B, which is excellent considering the difficulties and barriers already in place in the Shen. Valley.
July 7th, 2010 at 8:55 am
I’ve never been content with “low A, high B,” but I feel you’re right that I fell short of hitting the home run I hoped for.
My sense is that my performance was mixed. On the plus side, I felt that I had a good sense of the importance and meaning of things, and that I spoke from the heart. I would say that I never said anything trivial.
But where I fear I did not measure up is in two areas: one, I am unsure how well I chose what direction to take on each case, and two, I sense that I was not as able as I wish to command the various pieces of my answer and to flesh them out into an effectively powerful form.
It’s ALWAYS the case that radio compositions –done improvizationally on the spot– lack the coherence and strategic judgment of written work. But that may have been truer yesterday than usual.
On the other hand, I did feel I was always getting good wood on the ball. So the question is how these strengths and weaknesses balance out.
July 7th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Andy I think you’re absolutely correct about “getting good wood on the ball.” That’s exactly the way I would put it. So long as your ruminations and preparations about the next show stay the course I see you making some quality inroads. As you know the calls and emails can seem like they’re coming fast and furious, but based on what I heard, you seemed to adequately adapt in those situations. No doubt the added range of callers (outside of the local radio listenership) is a big plus!
