donna: did you refer to the business with Dr Flowers getting arrested trying to share some ideas with the President? It doesn't inspire hope. I'm guessing that he already has a list of doctors he'll sit down with and she isn't on it. Or any doctor like her.

When Obama talked with the GOP folks last week, he said fairly emphatically that he had to date, and wanted to continue to, run all health care proposals past non partisal health experts (and of course a lot of the platitudes that the GOPers threw at him that day would never pass that test).

This tells me that he is serious. I spent 6 years working among some of the best health care policy experts in CO and in the nation, and if Obama will simply include people of that caliber (& character), I'm not too worried about his stated approach.

My guess is that the GOP would run away from Obama's proposed process rapido, because they know that he has the facts on his side and wouldn't want the light of day shone on them. All they have is nonsense and platitudes.

.. well, did you all watch Bill Moyers last night? what was covered on that program makes Obama's words look suspect of his real involvement in this issue. Maybe this was the plan... ie to show the true shallowness and selfishness of the repubs .. I don't know...I'm not a poker player and I don't think Obama is much of one either... I'm not sure he can make this tactic work.. all the good cards have been played and I think he blew it!.. and did you see who supported and organised that so called dialog with the republicans after the SOTU address... it just gets worse and worse.

The success or failure of this approach may well hinge on what "Health Care Experts" are actually invited in for the discussion. Let's not forget how it went last year, when the various professional associations and advocates in favor of single-payer were systematically excluded from the hearings, while the corporados had free access. Out here in sunny California single-payer is moving through the legislature once again, with the usual misinformation being thrown around. It's not about government-controlled medicine, it's about a state-run single-payer Insurance program that would simply cut out the corporate insurance entities, with all their inefficiency, unfairness and profit-seeking. The delivery of medical care would still be through private doctors and hospitals, with freedom of choice and access for everyone. And a savings of about one third of the present cost. In light of global precedent and the current crisis it seems like a "no-brainer", but unfortunately that is a colloquialism that can cut both ways.
