One of Lincoln's objectives was to destroy the Democratic party of those days-recall the cries of "disunity, dishonor, and slavery." After Lincoln's murder, the GOP, a few years down the road began making deals with the returned Democrats to favor the big money men, corporations, etc., even to elect a president for the favor of withdrawing Federal troops from the South and ending reconstruction. We all have our hopes for the nation's wellbeing: good leadership is still a very important aspect and we haven't seen the kind of forcefulness yet I'd like to see, though as Andy says, it may be 'round the corner.
